Kitchen accessories
The parts of a kitchen you only notice when they are wrong.
Aluminium profile shutters with fluted glassA slim black frame around reeded glass. Lets a wall unit show something without showing everything inside it. Plate rack and glass traySteel racks that drain and store in the same place, set into a wall unit above the sink run. L-corner wall unitTakes the corner where two runs of wall units meet, instead of leaving a dead box you can only reach with a shoulder in it. Lift-up wall unitThe whole shutter lifts and stays up, so nothing swings into your head while you are working underneath it. Corner carouselA kidney-shaped tray that swings the back of a base corner unit out to you. More capacity than a corner pull-out, less reach. Roller shutter unitAn aluminium tambour that rolls up into the cabinet. Useful on a worktop appliance you want hidden but not put away. Cutlery trayA moulded insert sized to the drawer rather than dropped in loose, so it does not slide about when the drawer closes. Bottle and spice pull-outA narrow two-tier pull-out for oil and masala jars. Goes in the slim gap next to a hob that would otherwise be filler panel. Tandem box, deepA steel-sided drawer box on concealed runners. Deep enough for pressure cookers and stacked containers. Tandem box on Häfele runnersThe same drawer box on Häfele hardware. Worth asking which brand of runner is in a quote — it is most of the cost of a drawer. Tandem box, shallowThe shallow version, for the drawer directly under a hob where the burner box eats the depth. Gas cylinder trolleyA castored tray so the cylinder rolls out rather than being dragged across the carcass floor. Sink-door basketTwo tiers mounted on the inside of the sink cabinet door, for detergent and scrubbers. Uses space that is otherwise wasted. Pull-out binMounted to the door so it comes out with it. Under the sink is the obvious place and the one people forget to plan for. Swing-out binThe simpler, cheaper version: the bin swings clear on the door rather than running on rails.
Before you pay for any of it
Hardware is where a cheap quote hides.
Two quotes for the same kitchen can differ by a quarter and look identical on paper, because the runners, hinges and pull-outs are the part nobody itemises. A drawer is mostly its runner. A lift-up shutter is mostly its mechanism.
So ours are named by brand in the quote — Hettich, Hafele, Godrej, Olive and Ozone — rather than described as “imported” or “branded”. If a quote you are comparing does not name them, that is the first question to ask, whoever it came from.
You do not need all of this. Most kitchens use four or five of the fittings on this page and are better for leaving the rest out. Come and open a few, and we will tell you which ones earn their place in your layout.
